The thought of entitlement is that you are deserving of something. However, 1 Peter 2:9, shows us that such entitlement comes from our willingness to be who God has called us to be. His promises are yea and amen, and his grace is sufficient, but we have not because we ask not and we are of a little faith.
1 Peter 2:9 is an allusion to Exodus 19:6:
1 Peter 2:9: But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light
Exodus 19:6: And ye shall be to me a royal priesthood and a holy nation: these words shalt thou speak to the children of Israel.
In such a close parallel, the meaning is often more in the source [in this instance, Exodus] than in the copy [in this instance, 1 Peter], particularly as 1 Peter provides no context from which to derive a meaning specific to Christianity. The literal meaning in Exodus 19:6 is clear. God told Moses to tell the Israelites that if they kept his covenant, they would be a chosen people, royal priesthood and a holy nation. Exodus 19:6 is focused on a deep concern with "holiness", meaning the ritual purity of the people and the land.
1 Peter 2:5,12 shows that this passage was addressed to Christian Jews, so 1 Peter reminds them of God's covenant to Moses, and thus a reminder to us, today, as to how God desires for His people to be - holy.
Tree Planted by Water
by Chuck Musselwhite
Water is essential to all life. A tree planted by water is going to flourish. It will have the necessary nourishment in both water and sun to make its leaves green and fruit to grow. It’s not going to worry about the heat of the sun because there is no worry about drought. This is an excellent metaphor for our Christian life. The believer who is planted by the water of the Word of God and his Son Jesus Christ will endure to the end.
Jeremiah 17:7-8 NKJV
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, And whose hope is the LORD. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit.”
Well Established Roots
Trust and hope in God produces a developed root system. It is that root system that anchors us. When we trust in the Lord and not ourselves our roots go deep into the ground, and they make us unshakeable. Our roots enable us to weather what the world throws at us. The heat can bear down on us, and the winds can blow, but we will remain and overcome because we are watered by the Word of God. A developed roots system also produces growth. It brings life to the rest of the tree. It allows us to bloom and produce fruit. Continually trusting in the Lord will bring an unending supply. Some men believe in their strength, some trust in the power of others, but those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength.
Stand Firm
Don’t be consumed by anxiety or fear. Stand firm when this world tosses everything it has at you. Remember that we are forged through the trials of life. It is the stifling heat and the biting cold that strengthens what is essential eliminate what isn’t. Place your hope and trust in the Lord today.
The Enlightenment was a intellectual movement of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries marked by a celebration of the powers of human reason, a keen interest in science, the promotion of religious toleration, and a desire to construct governments free of tyranny.
Here, we look at enlightenment in regards to the power which God has given to all His people. A power that allows all believers to "speak" things into existence through unwavering faith and add blessings to their lives and change situations and circumstances.
Enlightenment, then, is the actuality of understanding along with the gaining of wisdom. We must become enlightened to the power and presence of God operating in our lives. When we are able to achieve, accept and embrace this mind changing truth, then, all things become possible through Jesus Christ our Lord.
